History

The Santa Barbara Police Department was founded January, 1, 1900 and the first police station was housed at City Hall located a De La Guerra Plaza.

Chief of Police

On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, the City Council appointed Kelly Gordon as Chief of Police for the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The Patrol Division is the largest division within the Police Department. Its primary responsibility is to provide uniformed law enforcement service to the community.

Uniformed police officers are generally the first contact a citizen has with a law enforcement agency. Professional Staff

This is an unclassified trainee position. Under supervision, incumbents are trained to answer and process all incoming emergency and non–emergency requests for police, fire, and medical assistance. Operate a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, video display terminals, and associated equipment. 

Journey level incumbents answer and process all incoming emergency and non-emergency requests for police, fire and medical assistance. Evaluate the information and create a CAD system incident, or provide information to the caller or transfer the call to the proper emergency provider.

Perform routine technical law enforcement duties related to parking enforcement and vehicle towing in a specialized City vehicle; patrol restricted parking zones on assigned schedules and routes; mark vehicles and observe vehicles to ensure conformity with parking regulations; issue citations and/or warnings for violations of parking ordinances and street storage complaints.
